On 19 September, Syriac film, faith, history and culture will take centre stage in Stockholm. The day begins with the Swedish premiere of Morine at Heron City and continues in the evening with a gala in Norsborg. Director Tony Farjallah and producer Takla Chamoun will travel to Sweden for the event, where their upcoming film project about Mor Charbel will also be presented.
On Saturday, 19 September, a full day dedicated to film and culture will take place in Stockholm. The event is organised by the Syriac Federation of Sweden, in cooperation with the Woman Empowerment Movement (W.E.M) and Saint Maroun’s Mission in Stockholm.
The day begins at 2:30 PM at Heron City, where Morine will have its Swedish premiere. The film tells the story of Saint Morine, a Syriac woman whose remarkable life holds a special place in Christian tradition and who is often described as one of the earliest women to embrace a monastic way of life.
Set against a historical and religious backdrop, the story follows Morine’s journey during a time when women had very limited opportunities to choose their own path in life. Her story is marked by faith, sacrifice and determination and has been passed down through generations.
The screening also offers the Syriac community in Sweden an opportunity to experience a story drawn from its own historical and Christian cultural heritage, brought to life through film.
The filmmakers are coming to Sweden
For the Swedish premiere, director Tony Farjallah and producer Takla Chamoun will travel from Lebanon to Sweden. Their presence will give the audience an opportunity to meet the people behind the production and gain a closer insight into the making of the film.
Following the afternoon screening, the programme continues in the evening at St. George’s Church in Norsborg. At 7:00 PM, the doors will open for a gala combining film, music and community.
During the gala, guests will have the opportunity to meet Tony Farjallah and Takla Chamoun and hear more about their work and upcoming projects.
New film about Mor Charbel – featuring Aramaic
An important part of the evening’s programme will be the presentation of the upcoming film project “Mor Charbel – The Story of God.”
Mor Charbel is one of the Middle East’s best-known Christian saints, and his life and legacy have had an impact far beyond the borders of Lebanon. The new film project aims to bring his story to an international audience.
For the Syriac community, there is another particularly interesting aspect: parts of the upcoming film will be in Aramaic. This means that a language with deep historical roots in the region will have a place in a modern film production.
The use of Aramaic in film and other major cultural productions also carries significance beyond the production itself. For a language whose future depends on its continued use and transmission to new generations, visibility in film, music and digital media provides another arena in which the language can be heard and gain greater recognition.
Music by Sargon Daoud
The evening will not be solely about film. Artist Sargon Daoud will provide live singing and music, adding a strong cultural and social dimension to the gala.
The ticket price of SEK 500 includes a main course together with a selection of hot and cold meze. The aim is to create an evening where the presentation of the film project is combined with dinner, music and opportunities for conversation and socialising.
The Swedish premiere of Morine and the presentation of the upcoming film about Mor Charbel therefore represent more than two individual film projects. They are also examples of how culture can find new forms of expression and reach new audiences.
